Tallahassee, Fla.- For the second week in a row, Florida State's track and field squad has the home field advantage and for the second week in a row, they used it to their benefit. Senior Matt Wernke made the hometown crowd proud as he tossed his personal-best in the hammer throw on day one of the FSU Relays at Mike Long Track.

Wernke (Tallahassee, Fla.) bested the regional mark he posted last weekend at the Snowbird Invite with a career-best 192'09.00" toss to finish first. The toss shattered his previous top mark by more than seven inches. Sophomore Travis Whitfield (Jay, Fla.) finished second in the event with a 180'02.00" mark.

On the track, senior Ryann Matthews took first place in section one of the women's 5000m run with a time of 19:44.92. Junior Ashley Montagnese was the next Seminole finisher in fourth place with a time of 20:15.69. Fellow juniors Mary Magee and Laura Cullen crossed the line sixth and seventh respectively.

Senior Debbie Huss took third in the 3000m run as she clocked a 9:56.48. Shannon Coates, also a senior, crossed the line next for the Seminoles in sixth place with a time of 10:27.34.

Competition will continue in the 29th annual FSU Relays beginning tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m. with the decathlon and the men's collegiate high jump. The event is scheduled to conclude on Saturday, March 29 when the Seminoles' 15-time All-American and seven-time national champion Walter Dix will run his first individual race of the outdoor season.
